Kuwait Bans the Export of Used Cooking Oil or Its Waste for One Year
In a move aimed at maximizing the value derived from the production of biofuel and promoting sustainable practices, the Minister of Trade and Industry, in collaboration with the Minister of State for Youth Affairs, has issued Ministerial Resolution No. (172) of 2023. The resolution imposes a one-year ban on the export of used cooking oil or its waste from the State of Kuwait.
According to the resolution, used cooking oil or its waste can only be sold to individuals or entities licensed by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, the Environment Public Authority, and the Public Authority for Industry. Moreover, those engaged in this activity must possess a designated place licensed by the relevant authorities.
The resolution also mandates that all transactions related to the sale of used cooking oil or its waste must be conducted through electronic payment methods. This requirement aims to enhance transparency and streamline financial transactions within the industry.
Highlighting the rationale behind the decision, the explanatory memorandum states that the ban is crucial for realizing added value for Kuwait. By converting the waste of used cooking oil into biofuel, the country aims to create self-sufficient products, diversify sources of income, and transfer modern technology. The funding for this transformative project is set to be sourced from the National Fund for Small Enterprises.
The memorandum emphasizes that supporting national projects, particularly those contributing to sustainable development and energy security, is paramount. The ban on exporting used cooking oil waste for one year seeks to harness opportunities, maximize benefits, and create added value for the state. It underscores the importance of regulating the collection and trade of used cooking oil waste within the Kuwaiti market, ensuring that such resources are harnessed for strategic projects and youth engagement.
