US: Not a Single Student Can Do Math at Grade Level in 53 Illinois Schools

Spry Community Links High School, in the Heart of Little Village in Chicago, says its vision is to “provide a challenging and supportive environment…to enable our students to succeed in the 21st century.” Number one on the school’s focus list? “Increasing reading and math scores to or above grade level.” But a look at state data that tracks reading and math scores for each Illinois school reveals two frightening facts about Spry. Not a single one of its 88 kids at the school can read at grade level. It’s the same for math. Zero kids are proficient. Spry is one of 30 schools in Illinois where not a single student can read at grade level. Twenty-two of those schools are part of the Chicago Public Schools and the other eight are outside Chicago.  The failure list in math is even longer. There are 53 schools statewide where not one kid is proficient in math. The data comes straight from the Illinois State Board of Education. The failure isn’t about money, either. Data from the Illinois State Board of Education shows spending at Spry was already at $20,000 per student before the pandemic. Today it spends $35,600. What’s really incredible is that many of these schools are […]

Saudi seeks to amend private education regulations to attract top institutions abroad

Saudi Arabia is working on legislation to amend the country’s education regulations to attract the world’s top educational institutions to open branches in the Kingdom. The Ministry of Education, represented by the Agency for Private University Education, is reviewing executive and organizational rules of the Private University Education Regulations. It aims to increase foreign investment opportunities in preparation for attracting the world’s top institutions and to facilitate the opening of their branches in the Kingdom. The initiatives are under the umbrella of the university system, which will contribute to a strategic transformation in line with Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 objectives. As part of its overall strategy, the ministry wants to increase private sector involvement and attract foreign investments, which will have a role in improving the outputs of university education and entering global competitiveness. The ministry’s initiatives reflect the size of the anticipated returns on educational economic growth rates. According to the most recent statistics released by the Statistics Center of the ministry, the total number of students enrolled in private colleges and universities has reached 86,000 in 15 universities and 42 licensed private colleges in the Kingdom. This includes nine non-profit universities. There are a total of 409 academic […]

Emergence and future of the fintech industry

By Roberto Mancone CEO and Executive Board Member Beyon Money We live in the 21st Century – precisely in 2022 – and yet many times we see candidates that have profiles resembling a CV built back in the year 2000 (it may seem like yesterday but it has already been more than 20 years). Fintech, like any other digital industry, needs to focus on Gen Z (that is people born between 1997 and 2012), from students in elementary school all the way to college. They are the current and future workforce, and they are our clients, influencers, and judges of our product and services… but they are also the ones determining the success or the failure of a venture initiated today or even a few years ago, either as users or as employees of a said new venture or of an incumbent. However, they are not the only ones. This chart should remind us constantly who are the clients and who the professionals will have to navigate through a constant super-fast evolution. In the first part of this article, I would like to focus on Gen Z and then further speak to Millennials and Generation X which are doomed to […]
