Kuwait Announces 3-Day Holiday, 40-Day Mourning After Death of Emir

Kuwait has announced a three-day holiday and 40 days of mourning following the death of Sheikh Nawaf Al Ahmad Al Sabah.

A message carried on social media channels of state-run news agency KUNA said: “Government announces three-day holiday, 40-day mourning after passing of Emir”.

The holiday will begin on Sunday, December 17 and end on Tuesday, December 19.

The Gulf country also announced Sheikh Mishal Al Ahmad Al Jaber Al Sabah was named as the Emir of the State

Prime Minister Sheikh Ahmad Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah, chaired an emergency cabinet meeting and paid tribute to the late Sheikh Nawaf’s achievements.

He said: “With great sorrow, the Council of Ministers expresses deep condolences on the passing away of our father, leader of our march His Highness the Amir Sheikh Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, who passed away following a journey of dedication and loyalty to his nation and its people.”

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of State for Cabinet Affairs and Minister of State for National Assembly Affairs Essa Al-Kanderi, announced that the Crown Prince Sheikh Mishal Al Ahmad Al Jaber Al Sabah would be the Emir of the State of Kuwait. The declaration is in line with the Constitution.

The funeral of Sheikh Nawaf will be restricted to family members and relatives, Minister of Amiri Diwan Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah Al-Mubarak Al-Sabah announced, appreciating sentiments of sorrow of citizens and expats in the country.

He said, in a statement, prayers would be held at Belal bin Rabah Mosque on Sunday, December 17 at 9am and a funeral would be held later in the morning.

Sheikh Mishal Al Ahmad Al Jaber Al Sabah and Al Sabah family members will personally receive the condolences of people at the Diwan of Al Sabah Family at Bayan Palace in Kuwait on Monday morning, and Tuesday morning and afternoon.
