Israel Prepares for Potential Conflict Amid Rising Tensions with Iran

Earlier this month, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu conducted a mock wartime meeting of his security cabinet in a bunker, while communities in northern Israel prepared shelters for a possible long-term conflict. Additionally, the military has been working on a new laser system to intercept rockets. The primary concern is Iran and its nuclear aspirations.

Israel has long viewed a nuclear-armed Iran as an existential threat and has focused on confronting Iran and its regional proxies in Syria, Lebanon, and the Palestinian territories. However, recent developments have heightened tensions. Iran has emerged from diplomatic isolation, forming a crucial military alliance with Russia, from which it seeks air defenses. It has also restored diplomatic ties with Saudi Arabia and encouraged its allies to launch missiles at Israel. Furthermore, Iran continues to enrich uranium, including a small amount nearly at weapons-grade levels, while denying any plans to create a bomb.

These developments, combined with a political crisis in Israel sparked by Netanyahu’s attempt to reform the judiciary, have pushed the Israeli government into a position where it is issuing daily warnings. Israel is making it clear that it will not hesitate to act, even unilaterally, if it perceives a significant threat from Iran.
